Sixth seed and former semi-finalist David Nalbandian suffered a second-round defeat by world number 145 Jeremy Chardy at the French Open. [ 3-6 4-6 6-2 6-1 6-2 ]

Seventh seed James Blake also made an early exit, losing 7-6 (7-2) 3-6 7-5 6-3 to Latvian teenager Ernests Gulbis. “I felt like I could have won this match and had better success here,” said Blake. “Now I have to forget about this and move forward and figure out what happened in time for the grass-court and hard-court season.

Federer dropped the opening set against Albert Montanes before winning 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 6-0 6-4.

Three-time defending champion Nadal let an early lead slip in the first set but cruised to a 6-4 6-0 6-1 victory against Nicolas Devilder of France.

Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko saw off Marat Safin with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 6-2 win over his Russian  compatriot.

Fifth seed David Ferrer was completely dominant in his clash with Frenchman Fabrice Santoro as he claimed a crushing 6-0 6-1 6-0 victory.

Ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka continued his good form with a 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (7-4) 6-1 win over Marin Cilic.

And 25th seed Lleyton Hewitt also made progress, beating Mardy Fish 6-4 6-3 6-2.

WOMEN’S NEWS

French star Amelie Mauresmo was handed a 6-3 6-4 defeat by Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro in the second round of the French Open.

Jankovic suffered an injury scare as she saw off New Zealand’s Marina Erakovic 6-2 7-6 (7-5). Jankovic will next play Slovakian 28th seed Dominika Cibulkova – who saw off Milagros Sequera of Venezuela 6-3 6-0 – for a place in the last 16.

Eighth seed Williams swept into the third round with a dominant 6-2 6-4 victory over Tunisia’s Selima Sfar.Next up for Williams is a tie with 26th seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy, who beat Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 3-6 6-1 6-1.

Kuznetsova made short work of America’s Vania King, triumphing 6-4 6-2, but Chakvetadze is out after losing 6-4 7-6 (7-2) to Kanepi.

Seventh seed Elena Dementieva of Russia beat Marta Domachowska 6-1 6-4, and French teenager Alize Cornet saw off Gisela Dulko 6-0 4-6 6-4.

World number one Maria Sharapova’s match against Bethanie Mattek was stopped due to bad light.
