French Open Update

Fourth seed Nikolay Davydenko opened his French Open campaign with a 6-3 6-3 6-3 win over Sweden’s Thomas Johansson.

Ninth seed Stanislas Wawrinka beat the showers to post an impressive 6-3 6-4 6-3 win over big-hitting German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

Sweden’s Robin Soderling pulled off a minor upset as he crushed Argentine 13th seed Juan Monaco 6-2 6-3 6-1.

And Croatia’s Mario Ancic, who is climbing the rankings following a long lay-off with glandular fever, knocked out 31st seed Andreas Seppi 6-2 7-6 (7-1) 6-2.

Defending champion Rafael Nadal managed only two games of his opening match before play was halted by rain.

Amelie Mauresmo came through a scrappy encounter with Olga Savchuk to reach the second round of the French Open. The Frenchwoman won the rain-interrupted match 7-5 4-6 6-1 after two-and-a-half hours on court.

Fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova was in fine form as she saw off Japan’s Aiko Nakamura 6-2 6-3, while Dinara Safina beat Kateryna Bondarenko 6-1 6-3.

But top seed Maria Sharapova must wait until Wednesday to open her campaign.

Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska, the 14th seed, booked a second-round meeting with Croat qualifier Jelena Pandzic with a 6-4 6-3 win over Mariya Koryttseva.
